Why We Offer This — At No Cost

Cancer therapies can be hard on your mouth. Many patients develop dry mouth (xerostomia), tooth sensitivity, and rapid cavities during or after treatment. We provide free, professionally applied fluoride treatments to help strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of decay while you focus on your health. It’s our way of giving back to the community and supporting patients through a tough time.

Important: To receive this free service, you must call our office and specifically request an appointment for the free fluoride treatment. Online booking isn’t available for this program.

How Cancer Treatments Can Affect Teeth

Head & Neck Radiation

  • Can reduce salivary flow (dry mouth), sometimes permanently.
  • Dry mouth changes mouth pH, increases harmful bacteria, and accelerates tooth decay.
  • “Radiation caries” can progress rapidly without preventive care.

Chemotherapy

  • Common effects include mouth sores (mucositis), taste changes, and higher risk of infection.
  • Salivary gland dysfunction and frequent snacking on soft foods/liquids may raise cavity risk.

Targeted & Immune Therapies

  • Some agents can cause oral side effects (dry mouth, irritation, infections).
  • Added caries risk when saliva is reduced or oral tissues are inflamed.

Medications

  • Antidepressants, antihypertensives, urologic meds, antihistamines and more can cause dry mouth.
  • Less saliva = less natural remineralization and a higher risk of cavities.

How Fluoride Helps

Professionally applied fluoride (most often a 2.26% fluoride varnish) supports your enamel in three key ways:

  • Re-mineralization: Helps repair early enamel damage caused by acids.
  • Acid resistance: Makes enamel less soluble in acidic conditions common with dry mouth.
  • Bacterial moderation: Helps reduce cariogenic bacterial activity on tooth surfaces.

For patients receiving head & neck radiation, fluoride is a cornerstone of prevention. Some patients may also benefit from custom trays with prescription fluoride gel at home; we’ll guide you if that’s appropriate.

What to Expect at Your Visit (15–30 Minutes)

  1. Quick Review: We review your treatment status, medications, and comfort needs.
  2. Gentle Cleaning (if needed): Light plaque removal to prepare teeth.
  3. Fluoride Application: Fast, comfortable varnish application — sets on contact.
  4. Personalized Plan: Tips for dry mouth relief, diet, and home fluoride use if indicated.

Aftercare: You can leave right away. We may suggest waiting 4–6 hours before brushing for best varnish uptake; normal activities resume immediately.

Who Qualifies?

  • Patients currently in cancer treatment or in recovery (any cancer type).
  • Especially helpful for those with head & neck radiation or dry mouth symptoms.
  • No judgment about your current oral health — come as you are.

How often? We typically recommend visits every 3–6 months based on your risk and comfort. We’ll coordinate this with your oncologist’s schedule when helpful.

Is It Safe?

Topical fluoride varnish has an excellent safety profile when applied professionally. We avoid products that may irritate sensitive tissues and tailor the plan if you have mouth sores, severe mucositis, or allergies. If you wear trays or have specific dietary restrictions, we adjust accordingly.
